WHY A READING CRITICALLY CLASS?

  • Sessions are taught by a certified special education/reading teacher with over 20 years of teaching experience.
  • Group-based model offers a perfect opportunity for students to engage in peer discussions; allowing students to connect and learn from each other.
  • Classes reinforce the belief that all students should have the opportunity to grow and succeed. Scholarships are offered to students in need.
  • Classes promote the belief that multicultural literature benefits ALL students. Research has shown that when students can relate global events to the themes, conflicts, and characterizations found in multicultural literature, it increases their understanding of current world issues. Students are then able to develop greater cognitive skills as they learn to engage and critically evaluate the texts that they read.

WHY CRITICAL READING?

Creating critical thinkers is the key to future success. Through reading, students begin to increase their curiosity about high interest topics, causing them to ask questions, draw conclusions and solve problems. Although essential at every grade level, a student’s ability to read to learn becomes crucial during 3rd to 6th grade. The skills students learn during these years will pave the way for the rest of their lives. Want your kids to excel at History, English, Math and Science, all while growing their love of reading?  Reading Critically is just the thing for you!

Science

Critical thinking involves asking questions, examining evidence, and figuring out conclusions. All of these actions are the basis for the scientific method.

Math

Critical thinking requires proficiency in both written and verbal expression. Providing students the opportunity to demonstrate written and verbal explanations has been proven to help in the improvement of mathematical problem-solving.

The importance of critical thinking has been established since the time of Socrates

Research shows that a large majority of U.S. college graduates lack essential critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, abilities that directly contribute to academic and professional success. A recent report reveals that 93% of college faculty consider analytical and critical thinking to be among the most essential skills students can develop, and while a majority of students believe college experiences prepare them to think, only 6% of graduates can actually demonstrate these essential skills ( blue right-pointing triangle).
